BIG SPRING, TX – Last night, the Big Spring City Council approved an amended first reading of an ordinance addressing safety, efficiency, coverage, and budgetary concerns for the Fire Department. This ordinance established classifications and a number of positions for the Fire Department. According to the approved amended ordinance, this will decrease the number of sworn fire department personnel by ten from 74 to 64 through attrition with no current positions being eliminated.
The amended portion of the ordinance removed Section 3 which stated that to improve safety, efficiency, and coverage the five fire departments would be consolidated into four departments, with the station at 18th and Main closing. It stated that personnel and equipment would be redeployed to the remaining four fire stations.
Consolidating to four fire stations is still a topic of discussion at this time, however, it is unclear which station will be closed.
