BIG SPRING, TX — Clarissa Teichman officially stepped into her new position as Chief Appraiser for Howard Central Appraisal District on June 1, 2023, but says she’s been training for the position under the interim Chief Appraiser Robert Petree since August 2022 while she was still the Deputy Appraiser.
Teichman strives for the department to be seen as accessible to the public and transparent. The appraisal district has undergone changes, such as updating the website to better serve the community in an easier and more efficient way, and becoming more involved in the community. She believes that the best way to deal with the public is just to treat people like people.
“We found that the more knowledge that we have that we can convey to the public, the more understanding they’re gonna be and the more they’re gonna know why we do what we do,” she said.
Teichman told KBest News that the staff at HCAD is knowledgeable, willing to learn, and ready to help. She said all have stepped up to improve the public’s experience with the department and to provide accurate valuations.
“When they talk to the public, sometimes, you just stare and watch. It’s kinda magical,” joked Teichman. “They want to help and that’s what I’ve been looking for when I hire new. Are you gonna have the type of attitude we need here? One of the things I tell anybody that’s hired new is these girls have been here, and they’ve been through a lot of ups and downs. They’re in a place where one rude comment, one mean act can throw them back into the public’s eye as not a good place to be, and we don’t want that,” said Teichman.
She went on to say that they are open, and welcome people to come talk to them and they’ll do anything they can to help within their means, within the law. Plus, they’re willing to listen to property owners in order to get more accurate and fair property valuations.
