BIG SPRING, TX — Earlier this month, Keep Big Spring Beautiful, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing their community environment through community clean-up efforts and education, was recently awarded 3rd place in the Governor Community Achievement Award in Category 6 with a population between 25,001 – 40,000. For more than thirty years, Keep Texas Beautiful, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), has awarded the prestigious Governor’s Community Achievement Awards to Texas communities for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful.
On Monday, June 26th, Love Our Lake, the annual clean-up event for the Comanche Trail Lake, will be at 6:30 pm in Big Spring. Participants will gather at the Dora Roberts Community Center, located at 100 Whipkey Dr. Supplies such as bags, grabbers, and gloves will be provided.
According to Liz Hafley, Vice President of Social Media for Keep Big Spring Beautiful, the purpose of the event is to clean up the waterways.
“There’s a lot of trash out there when people go fishing and don’t take their trash with them. We just want a nice place for people to go, hang out, and it just looks better,” said Hafley.
Since Keep Big Spring Beautiful was recently awarded the Area 2 and State title of 2023 Friend of Conservation, Hafley advised that a production crew would be on-site recording the clean-up event to create a video that will be shown at the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts State Convention in Fort Worth October 30 – November 1, 2023. She encouraged everyone to show up.
Monday’s weather forecast is expected to have a high of 107 degrees. KBSB will provide water, but participants are urged to take proper precautions when working in the sun, such as wearing hats and sunscreen.
Keep Big Spring Beautiful meets on the first Monday of every month at noon in the Cactus Room on the Howard College campus. Plus they gather every Tuesday for their Toasty Tuesday Trashoff.
