COAHOMA, TX — Coahoma High School won their first Softball State Championship in 1998 when it was still a 2A school. Now the next generation of softball players are continuing on that legacy with their win of the 3A State Softball Championship. Several of the current softball players mothers also played for Coahoma, including Kenni Kay Wright who was a part of the 1998 team.
Kenni Kay’s daughter, Baylor Wright, is an outfielder for the Bulldogettes. She started playing softball when she was 8 years old and says she often heard stories about her mom playing in the 1998 State Championship. Last week, Baylor and her teammates became a part of Coahoma’s history of State Championship wins.
“You think about it since the day you hear about it. It’s something to strive for,” said Baylor regarding the experience she now shares with the 1998 team.
Kenni Kay told KBest News that it was surreal to have been a part of the 1998 winning team and to see her daughter’s team win now.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s real. It’s always amazing to do it yourself, but it’s better to watch your kid do it, a lot better,” said Kenni Kay.
Head Softball Coach Alex Orosco told KBest News that after all the hard work the girls put in all year long, it’s nice to be able to reap the reward of winning the State Championship. When asked how big of a role the moms prior softball experiences had in preparing the girls for State, Orosco said they helped a lot.
“They’ve been there, done that. There’s no acclimation. There’s no getting there and let’s see what it’s like. Their moms have done it. Their families have done it. Experience is a huge advantage and we’re lucky to have that,” said Coach Orosco.
He went on to say that a lot of the girls are multisport athletes and it’s a big conducer of success.
“They work hard and we’re proud of them,” he continued.
There will be a celebration parade for the Bulldogette Softball tonight in Coahoma. It’ll start at 6 pm at Dairy Queen and travel north to the Coahoma Park to share watermelon and water with the community.
