BIG SPRING, TX — After 26 years of service to Howard, Glasscock, and Martin Counties in the 118th District, District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson will retire later this month. He’ll be replaced by current Howard County Attorney Joshua Hamby.
Wilkerson, who’s been practicing law since 1985, told KBest News that he submitted his letter to the Governor’s Office announcing his retirement on March 6th, but it took 2 months for an appointment to be made. Wilkerson will remain the District Attorney until Hamby is confirmed for the position by the Texas Senate, which is expected to occur later this month.
Wilkerson told KBest News that it has been a real honor to stand for the State of Texas in the courtroom and to represent the people of Howard, Glasscock, and Martin counties.
“I can’t think of anything I would have rather done. It was a goal of mine for a long time, and I enjoyed it for, obviously, quite a long time. I appreciate every bit of it. It’s been a tremendous honor, a wonderful adventure to come in every day and see what new challenges are out there. While I’m going to miss it, it’s time to move on,” said Wilkerson.
He went on to say that he’s looking forward to taking time off and figuring out what he wants to do next.
Hamby told KBest News he’s excited about the appointment and, hopefully, he’ll get to step into the role of District Attorney. If he is confirmed by the Texas Senate, the Howard County Commissioners will have to make an appointment to fill the County Attorney position for the remainder of the elected term.
