The Big Spring UIL Academic team dominated the recent 5-4A District meet by earning 830 sweepstakes points. The total was three points shy of matching the combined total of the other five schools in the district. “We know that we have some great competitors,” Jennifer Adams, UIL Academic Coordinator stated “But results like this really show the preparation and competitiveness of our students.”
Big Spring won the team events in Journalism, Number Sense, Calculator, Mathematics, Spelling, Current Issues and Events, Social Studies, Literary Criticism, and Speech. By virtue of placing first through third or being on the winning team for most events, the Steers will be taking a record number of students to the UIL Regional Meet Held on the campus of Texas Tech April 20-21.
Leading the Steers was senior Marco Tan who placed first in Number Sense, Calculator, Mathematics and Science. Tan was also the Top Chemistry Scorer and Top Physics Scorer. “I want to defend my State Championship in Mathematics and Calculator as well as placing in the medals in Science.” Tan said.
Joining Tan was fellow senior Ananya Limaye who was the district champion in Editorial Writing, News Writing, and Feature Writing as well as placing third in Calculator Applications and fourth in Copy Editing.
Other District Champions include: Madline Jordan-Hisel in Copy Editing, Morgan Griffith in Computer Applications, Salvador Juarez in both Social Studies and Current Issues and events, Ashley Melendez in Ready Writing, David Summers in both Literary Criticism and Spelling.
On the speech and debate side of the meet, Big Spring only dropped three of the 15 Regional qualifying spots. The team swept the top three spots in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Informative Speaking and Persuasive Speaking.
Tyler Grove took home first in LD Debate as well as 2nd in Persuasive speaking. Harper Duran was District Champion in Persuasive speaking as well as 2nd in Poetry Interpretation. Jack Hamby placed 1st in Informative Speaking and 4th in Poetry Interpretation.

- Richard Stanislawski second in Current Issues,
- Kaegan Baker third in both Current Issues and Events and Social Studies,
- Leila Franco second in Ready Writing,
- Ashley Melendez third in Literary Criticism,
- James Pasqual second in Spelling,
- Julianna Summers fourth in Spelling and Prose,
- Zoe Shaw sixth in Poetry,
- Lilianna Anderson second in Prose,
- Ella Correa third in both Prose and Informative Speaking,
- Avery Williams second in LD Debate,
- Ethan Barker third in LD Debate,
- Chloe Sanchez third in Persuasive Speaking as well as fifth in LD Debate,
- and Morgan Griffith third in Informative Speaking.

This is the sixth year in a row in which the Big Spring High School Academic Team has won the overall District Championship.
