BIG SPRING, TX — Big Spring resident Mike Tarpley, U.S. Army Veteran, is being celebrated by Lexmark as a real American Hero as part of their annual Veterans Day celebration this year on Nov 11, 2022.
Lexmark’s program VALORR, which stands for Veterans Association of Lexmark Organized to Recognize and Respect, recognizes Veterans within the community and those that work for Lexmark, a printer company.
Jeff Feldman, Field Service Specialist for Lexmark, nominated Tarpley to be recognized by Lexmark after meeting him through his work at the West Texas VA and learning about his commitment to Veterans.
Tarpley served in the United States Army from Dec. 1966 to Dec. 1969. He served during the Vietnam War and he is featured in the book Tiger Bravo’s War, by Rick St. John, which follows a band of young paratroopers, from the same battalion in the elite 101st Airborne Division during their first year of combat in the Vietnam War.
When asked how he felt about the recognition from Lexmark, Tarpley stated that he was extremely humbled by the experience because he believed there were other Veterans who were more deserving.
Currently, Tarpley serves as the Senior Vice Commander for the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, and is a Quilt of Valor presenter for the local area. He also leads a PTSD peer group at the West Texas VA in Big Spring, and is coordinator for the Purple Heart Hunt in Eden, TX.
