BIG SPRING, TX — During last night’s Big Spring City Council meeting, Mayor Robert H. Moore read a proclamation declaring October 17-21, 2022 as Texas Chamber of Commerce Week in Big Spring and presented it to Debbye Valverde, Executive Director for the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, and Chamber Board President Kayla Jo Nichols and incoming Chamber President Michelle Hamlin.
Established in 1919, the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce is one of more than six hundred local chambers of commerce in Texas that have distinguished themselves as the voice of business in our state. Its mission is to advance the civic, economic, cultural, social betterment and interests of its members and to the citizens of Big Spring and Howard County. The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce unceasingly promotes the community for quality growth and development; and serves as an advocate for the creation, growth and general welfare of businesses in Big Spring and Howard County. The Chamber actively promotes the expansion of business opportunities on behalf of its members through referrals, seminars, partnerships, technical assistance, and marketing; and has sought to achieve successful results for the State of Texas in a cooperative spirit with other organizations.
Large / Bulk Item Pickup for District 4 will be on Wednesday, 10/19/22, and this must be scheduled in advance by calling the Public Works Office at 432-264-2501, or email nhernandez@mybigspring.com. According to a recent announcement, the deadline to schedule a pickup in District 4 is 5 pm on Monday, Oct. 17th.
ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) Funds have been received by the City and bids for projects are in progress.
Bids were awarded for a fire truck, ambulance, and two EKG monitors for EMS. The bid for the fire truck was awarded to Fouts Bros Fire Equip for $588,758. This was $21,242 under budget. The bid for the ambulance was awarded to SERVS (Southern Emergency & Rescue Vehicle Sales) for $405,891.13, which was $4,108.68 under budget. The bid for the two EKG monitors was awarded to Zillow EKG for $66,551.02. This was over budget by $1,551.02. All bids were approved by councilmembers.
Event funding requests from the Big Spring Convention and Visitors Bureau were approved for Oktoberfest 2022 and Crossroads Comic and Toy Show. Oktoberfest was awarded $12,800. It is hosted by Hotel Settles and estimated to bring in 104 Hotel rooms for the event on October 22nd. This is the 4th year that the event has requested funding from the Big Spring CVB. Crossroads Comic and Toy Show is organized by Tony’s Toys. It’ll be held October 22-23 at the Dora Roberts Community Center, and is estimated to bring in 20 hotel rooms. This is the first year that the event has requested funding.
A couple of City Council meetings in November and December will be rescheduled due to the holiday season. The Nov. 22nd meeting has been moved to Nov 8th at 6 PM, and the Dec. 27th meeting has been moved to Dec. 13th at 6 PM.
First reading to Repeal of a Resolution authorizing the submission of a SAFER Grant on behalf of the Fire Dept due to budgeting concerns was approved.
First reading was approved for an ordinance that amends language in Ch. 44 “Solid Waste” Article I “In General,” Section 44-7 “Collection by City: Exception,” Subsection (d) to update the section with the new Big Sandy Landfill address; and amend section 44-8 “Collection of City-Furnished Containers,” Subsection (c), to prohibiting the blocking of containers set by the user.
Johnathan Ray nominated by Nick Ornelas, District 1 councilman, to serve on the McMahon-Wrinkle Aviation Advisory Board. Dale Avant nominated by Ornelas to continue serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission.
