BIG SPRING, TX — Recently it was announced that Big Spring ISD and non-profit organization Crossroads Housing Development Corporation have partnered to provide real-world hands-on experience to Big Spring High School construction students.
Anna Scott, Project Manager for CHDC, explained that the students will go to the property twice per week. Every 3-4 weeks, the students will be there the whole day. While they’re at the property, the General Contractor is there and the construction trades teacher is there as well.
“They’re learning about the construction process, basically from step one, not step zero, but step one,” said Scott.
She also advised that back when the program had been called Fresh Start in the early 2000s, CHDC had worked with students from Southwest College for the Deaf in Big Spring. She stated that it had been a good experience and they wanted to pursue that partnership with another educational entity because there’s a huge lack of construction professionals around Texas.
Scott advised that contractors are excited about kids showing interest in construction. She stated that they’ll also bring in other professionals outside of the plumbers and carpenters, by bringing in a designer, an architect, and appraiser because they want to get students interested in a future that doesn’t involve $90,000 in debt.
Scott went on to say that even if students choose to not pursue a trade, CHDC is excited about their participation in the program because it will make them more confident homeowners.
