BIG SPRING, TX — During last night’s meeting of the Big Spring City Council, Mayor Robert Moore spoke on the current dog issue of overpopulation and a full animal shelter. He stated that currently there were 36 dogs at the Big Spring Animal Shelter and the capacity is 35. Some of the suggestions to help the issue included expanding the visitor hours for the shelter, hiring an additional worker to manage the shelter, making the shelter a one-stop-shop for adoptions, making physical improvements to the facility, and establishing an internet connection to assist in promoting pet adoptions.
Several community members spoke in favor of ending the no-kill policy at the Big Spring Animal Shelter. Two of the people who commented on the topic had actually been attacked by stray dogs. A few people also spoke in favor of keeping the no-kill shelter and increasing the number of volunteers, and hiring a specific position to manage the shelter.
Six of seven Councilmembers approved the first reading of a resolution repealing resolution 003-2016, which had previously set the goal of ending the euthanization of homeless pets. Troy Tompkins, Councilman for District 5, voted against.
This means the Big Spring Animal Shelter will be a kill shelter, upon approval of the serving reading, but Mayor Moore stated that they would try their best to not have to euthanize any of the animals.
