Last week, first reading of an ordinance to rename Buffalo Pavilion inside the Comanche Trail Park in Big Spring to Stewart Pavilion, in honor of Howard and Vicki Stewart was approved with a 6-0 vote by the Big Spring City Council members at Tuesday night’s meeting on Feb. 8, 2022.
According to Hayley Herrera, Community Services Director for the City of Big Spring, the Parks and Recreation Board approached the City to ask if they could rename a pavilion that was not already named after someone to “Stewart Pavilion” in order to honor the Stewarts for all their work within the community. Howard was a Big Spring City Council member and volunteer, plus he and his wife Vicki had been a large part of the Comanche Trail Festival of Lights.
“The [Parks and Recreation Board] thought it was important to recognize them for such a huge event that has brought so many people to Big Spring,” said Herrera.
Also during the meeting, am Emergency reading of a resolution to allow Big Spring City Attorney Andrew Hagen to act as an intermediary between the City of Big Spring and the Big Spring Housing Authority for the purpose of negotiating a lease of real property between the two was approved by council with a vote of 6-0. During the discussion for this item, City Manager Todd Darden suggested that the BSHA could use the West Side Daycare building at ABC Park. He advised that the building would need some work but they could rent the property for $1 to the BSHA because they provide an invaluable service to the city.
Big Spring Housing Authority provides housing assistance to low-income residents through the management of the area’s Housing Choice Voucher Program – Section 8. This program assists very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. It is income based and the eligibility guidelines are set by HUD, which is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Big Spring Fire Department recently received a $10,000 donation from Oxy petroleum. A budget amendment was approved by the council so that the department could use it to purchase electric glass cutters.
Council members approved an ordinance to appoint alternate Zoning Board of Adjustment members because a supermajority is needed to make decisions. If one person can’t make it, then nothing can get accomplished. The alternate would be called on to serve on the board if a board member was absent. That way, business could still be conducted.
