Coahoma boys A team wins District 5-3A title, girls team finishes 2nd


The Coahoma A boys golf team captured the 5-3A district title, and the girls team came in second at the tournament held at the Comanche Trail Golf Course on Wednesday.

 

The Coahoma A team shot a 381 – 378 - 759, and the girls team shot 426 – 408 - 834 during the two-day tournament. Both teams qualified for the Region I competition. 

 

Ryan Shifflett placed first in the medalist standings. The Coahoma High School freshman fired off an 86 – 92 – 178 after 36 holes, but he faced stiff competition from Crane’s Donny Bishop, who tied with Shifflett with a combined score of 178. The Coahoma High School freshman won the top seed after a playoff round.

 

Fellow Coahoma teammate, Ky Kemper also had an excellent showing at the tournament. He shot an 87 – 92 - 179 to finish third in the medalist standing. The rest of the A team fared well on the links and consisted of Tanner Purcell (107 – 93 - 200), Billy Bailey (101 – 101 - 202), and Rance Redden (109 – 111 - 220).

 

In the girls competition, Julia Cox led the team to second place. She carded 97 - 97 - 194 after 36 holes and finished fourth in the medalist standings. Also heading to region competition from the Coahoma girls team are Providence Dickson (121 – 100 - 221), Makayla Chavez (110 – 114 - 224), Zoie Joslin (111 – 107 - 218), and Isabella Cox (108 – 104 – 212).

Playing in the individual medalists category, Coahoma’s Hartlie Smithie had an outstanding day to finish off the season. She placed third out of nine competitors in her category with a score of  112 – 119 - 231. The Coahoma B boys team finished the day in sixth place. The team consisted of Aaron Turnbough (107 – 112 - 219), Rowdy Atkins (108 – 94 - 202), Nick Gonzales (114 – 112 - 226), and Chris Thurman (127 – 110 - 237).

 

The Region I-3A Tournament will be held at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird. The boys tournament is April 19-20, and the girls tournament is April 21-22.

Hawks Men's Basketball fall to Western Texas College in NJCAA Region 5 Western Division Championship game


After defeating the #1 nationally ranked team South Plains College on Tuesday night, the Howard College Hawks Men's basketball team moved on to the final round of the NJCAA Region 5 Basketball Tournament. 

 

The Hawks competed for the NJCAA Region 5 Western Division Championship against Western Texas College. After another nailbiting game, the final score was in favor of ther Westerners - Howard College 48, Western Texas College 51.

Big Spring Steers Golf team earns District Champion Title


The Big Spring Steer Golf Team earned the title of District Champions earlier this week! After a 3 day total, the boys stepped up and were 85 shots ahead of 2nd place Levelland team. Also, All-Star representatives, Alex Leuschner took 1st place, Phillip Lopez earned 6th place, Reece Harris placed 8th, and Christian Martinez placed 9th.

Howard College Hawks Advance to Final Round of NJCAA Region V Basketball Tournament


On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, Howard College Hawks battled South Plains in Round 2 of the NJCAA Region 5 Basketball Tournament that was held at Lubbock Christian University.

 

The Women’s team lost to South Plains, final score was 41-57. The Men’s team won their game against the #1 Nationally ranked South Plains College Men’s team with a final score of 61-60. The Hawks will now advance to the Region 5, Western Division Championship.

 Former Hawks Basketball Coach Mark Adams gets the nod to become the next Head Basketball Coach at Texas Tech University


Former Howard College Hawks Men’s Head Basketball Coach Mark Adams was recently named as the new Head Basketball Coach for Texas Tech’s Men’s Basketball team.

 

Adams helped lead Texas Tech to the 2019 NCAA National Championship final in his third season as an assistant coach after the team advanced to the 2018 Elite Eight. He had also previously led Howard College, located in Big Spring, to the 2010 NJCAA National Championship and was named the NJCAA's National Coach of the Year. Adams worked with the Hawks as the Men’s Head Basketball Coach from 2004-2013.

 

During his tenure as a head coach, he has piled up 15 Coach of the Year honors; and has also captured six region, conference, or district Coach of the Year honors over his career. Adams has also received the Good Scout Award in 2019 by the Lone Star District of the Buffalo Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Howard College Basketball teams advance to Round 2 in Region 5 Basketball Tournament


Both Howard College Hawks basketball teams won their games in the first round of the Region 5 Basketball Tournament in Lubbock yesterday afternoon.

 

The Women's team won over Clarendon 62-38. They’ll play again today at 2 PM. The Men’s team won 72-63, also over Clarendon. They’ll play at 8pm. Both teams will be competing against South Plains College.

Softball and Baseball Updates for Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, and Stanton High Schools


Coahoma Bulldogettes earned district win number 5 by defeating Crane on Friday. Final score was 18-2. Their next game will be a non-district game against Colorado City at home on Tuesday, April 5. Varsity plays at 5 PM.

 

Coahoma Bulldogs lost to Crane; final score was 8-9. The next game for the Bulldogs will be on Tuesday when they host Sonora. Varsity plays at 7 PM.

 

Steers lost to Estacado. Final score was 12-20. Tuesday, April 5, 2021, they'll travel to San Angelo to take on Lake View. That game begins at 7 PM. 

 

Lady Steers did not play this weekend, but they're next game will be on Tuesday, 4/5/21, at Sweetwater to take on the Lady Mustangs. Varsity plays at 5 PM.

 

Forsan Lady Buffs won against Seagraves. Final score was 15-0. Tuesday, 4/5/21, they'll take on Tahoka. Varsity plays at 5 PM. 

 

Buffs won against Hamlin. Final score was 11-3. Tuesday, they'll travel to Colorado City to play the Wolves. Varsity plays at 7 PM.

 

Stanton Baseball lost to Sonora, 8-12. Monday, 4/5/21, Stanton will have a non-district away game against Brownfield.
