The following changes have been made to the 2019 Junior Varsity Bulldog football schedule.
-
Sept. 5, JV Bulldogs vs Stanton, away, 6 p.m.
-
Sept. 12, Open
-
Oct. 3, JV Bulldogs vs Forsan, home, 6 p.m.
Two teams cancelled because their programs can not field a JV team this year.
“As in any sport, if we have teams cancel on us I will do anything in my power to find replacement games,” said Chris Joslin, CISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. “Our kids work and prepare every week and need to play games. Even if it means playing the same team multiple times, we need to compete.”
The JV Bulldogs football team opened the season with a win over the Forsan Buffaloes Thursday night in Forsan. Coahoma won 20-0.

It’s time to meet the 2019-2020 Coahoma Bulldogs and Bulldogettes.
Meet the Bulldogs, a community pep rally, will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium.
“We are so excited for this year,” said Coahoma ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Chris Joslin. “Our kids have worked hard through the summer to prepare for this year from athletics to band and cheerleading. In athletics alone, we had 75 of the students who attended summer conditioning make the 100 percent club and their hard work is already showing in their performance.”
The event will begin at 7 p.m. Monday when the community will have a chance to meet and cheer for junior high and high school athletes playing football, volleyball, and cross country along with members of the award-winning Big Red Band and the Coahoma cheerleaders.
The crowd will also have a chance to meet the 2019-2020 coaching staff and their families along with student trainers, ball boys and flag runners.
The Big Red Band’s drumline will perform and to cap off the night, the band will play the school song and fight song.

The Forsan Buffaloes took on Grape Creek and Eldorado in a football scrimmage last Friday. Here, Forsan Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Jason Phillips, told KBest News they team was able to move up and down the field every series.
Coach Phillips told KBest News that the team is ahead of schedule, starting 7 sophomores on defense and 6 on offense. The team has 6 returning seniors, with 2 starting on Offense and 2 starting on defense.
According to Coach Phillips, Forsan will be moving to a 3-4 defense as opposed to the hybrid 4-3 that was run last year.
When asked about this year’s schedule, Phillips stated that it would be tough.
"It's gonna be tough, but that's always on purpose. I mean, we want a tough schedule early. We found out years ago, you know. We'd breeze through easy districts then get to playoffs and take it on the chin [in] the first round," said Coach Phillips. "Especially as tough as our district is, I think the tougher we make that pre-district schedule the better."

COAHOMA — The Bulldogettes forced the Lady Cougars to five sets before losing the non-district match on Saturday — 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 25-16, 14-16.
Although she would have preferred a different outcome, Bulldogettes Head Coach Jamie Bonner said she was proud of how resilient her team played against the Lady Cougars, who were a Class 1A playoff semifinalist in 2018.
“This team is not going to lay down because we are behind by two sets,” Bonner said. “We are going to fight back every single set, and I think that is going to eventually pay off for us in the long run. We didn’t get it done in three sets or five sets today, but because so many players participated in summer conditioning, they were not tired after five sets and were still chasing down balls up until the last point. I am proud of their efforts today.”
Caitlyn Corley and Kirah Kimball led the Bulldogettes on offense with 10 kills each followed by Sydney Rinard with 7. Zoie Joslin had 28 assists and Madison Rodgers pounded out 3 aces in the game.

The last Scenic Mountain Moonlight Rave Run of the summer will be this Friday, August 16th, at 11:55 PM. Race participants are asked to arrive by 11:30 PM in order to be prepared to begin the race at the designated start time.
Ron Alton, Manager for the Big Spring State Park, advised that the triple-digit heat drops significantly around midnight and makes for a comfortable climate for the race. Plus, the backdrop of sparkling city lights makes for a spectacular view from the top of the Big Spring State Park.
Online registration for the race can be completed at permianbasinevents.com. Cost is $20 per person. Be advised that registration will be available on site before the race begins and cost will increase to $25 per person. Those planning to register on-site should arrive about 11:15 PM to allow enough time to get registered for the event.

The Coahoma Bulldogettes begin volleyball season with a 3-2 record after competing in the Falcon Fest Tournament hosted by Veribest ISD this past weekend.
Coahoma earned solid wins against McCamey, Paint Rock, and the San Angelo Central Freshman Blue team on Friday and lost against Crane and Fort Davis on Saturday.
Overall, Bulldogette Head Coach Jamie Bonner said she is encouraged by her players performance in their first competitive setting.
“We have a lot of learning to do, but we are also much further along this year than we were this same time last year,” Bonner said. “The advantage we have this year is that every single player is a hustler. They get out and work hard every day.”
Bonner added the majority of the players participated in summer conditioning and the results are showing on the court.
“You could tell on day one of two-a-day workouts who participated in summer conditioning,” Bonner said. “They are faster to the ball and their reflexes are sharper. It’s definitely going to pay off for us this year. I think we have one of the most athletic volleyball teams Coahoma has seen in a while.”
Over the two-day tournament, MaKynlee Overton led on offense racking up 21 kills followed by Caitlyn Corley with 18 and Kirah Kimball with 16. Standout freshman Zoie Joslin made 45 assists during the tournament.
Next: The Bulldogettes travel to Lubbock on Tuesday to face off against the Estacado Lady Matadors in a non-district match. JV Red and White teams play at 5 p.m. while the varsity game begins at 6 p.m.

Hang gliders will return to the skies over Big Spring next week. The Big Spring Nationals competition will take place at McMahon-Wrinkle Airport August 11 through 17.
This year’s event is part of a series of competitions to determine the 2019 U.S. National Hang Gliding Champion and is sanctioned by the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association. It will also be the test event for next year’s 1st FAI Pan-American Hang Gliding Championships, sanctioned by the World Air Sports Federation.
The public is invited to watch the launch activity, which normally happens between noon and 1 PM, depending on the weather. Visitors can see the pilots getting ready and lining up, towing up behind ultralight airplanes, and circling above the airport to get high enough to start. It takes about an hour to get everyone into the air.
The City provides shaded bleachers at the McMahon-Wrinkle airport (enter through the terminal). There are restrooms inside the terminal, and there is usually food available for purchase before the launching starts. The airport is on the west side of town, near where Business 20 intersects with Interstate 20.
Belinda Boulter, Co-Organizer and Meet Director, explained that the competition is a race to a goal, with a different task announced at a briefing every morning. Daily tasks are designed to take three or four hours for the winner to complete, and often include turnpoints, so they might look like a dogleg or a zigzag or even a triangle. The longest task ever called at Big Spring was 215 miles, with five pilots making goal. But normal tasks are more commonly between 100 miles and 150 miles. During the competition the Terminal office usually has some information about daily activities: (432) 264-2362.
“There are two reasons we keep coming back to Big Spring: the weather, and the community,” said Boulter, noting that this will be the seventeenth year for this event. “There are very few places in the world with such consistent, excellent flying conditions. And the support of the community is unique — visitors from other regions or other countries are always amazed at the genuine welcome we find in Big Spring and will agree there's no place like it.” She pointed out that many local volunteers work hard to make the competition a success.
Ultralight Flights
Although tandem hang glider flights will not be available, it’s possible to take a flight in one of the Bailey-Moyes Dragonfly ultralight tow planes with designer Bobby Bailey. These flights take place in the early morning or the evening, before or after the other event activities and when the air is smoother. The price starts at $65 for a 15-mnute flight. All flying is weather-dependent, and reservations are advised: call Jim Prahl at 352-516-8618.

The community is encouraged to come out and support the Coahoma Bulldogs as they kick off football workouts starting with a Midnight Madness Practice Sunday night.
According to Coahoma ISD Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Chris Joslin, UIL rules allow programs to officially start practice on Monday Aug. 5, so the team will begin workouts at 12:01 a.m.
“It’s the first practice. The players are going to have a lot of high energy, so why not do it in the cool weather,” Joslin said. “Plus, it gives the parents an opportunity to come watch. Most of the time when you are practicing in the morning, parents are at work. I know it’s late at night, but it is a good chance for parents to come up and watch the first practice, and makes it pretty neat for the kids.”
Joslin also encourages the community to attend the event which will be held at the Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium.
“The stands will be open,” he said. “We will turn on the lights a few minutes before midnight and then we will come out there and get going. Anybody in the community that wants to come, we will be out doing our normal thing. Just come out and support these boys who have put in all this time.”
Following the three-hour workout, the players will have 36 hours to recuperate before reporting to practice again at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Joslin added the staff and the players are geared up for the football season.
“We’ve been excited for this time to come since November,” he said. “The kids have put in a lot of hard work over the off season. We had outstanding numbers over the summer with both boys and girls working out. We had over 70 kids make the 100 percent club which is awesome. We have great senior leadership for both the boys and girls and that is trickling down into the other grades, so we are excited to see what happens.”
Now with a full year under his belt as the Bulldog head coach, Joslin, who was hired in the summer of 2018, said he and his staff are feeling much more confident heading into the season.
“We are 900 times ahead of where we were last year,” he said. “Last year, we still felt like we were ready to go when it was time, but we’ve taken advantage of the new rules this summer to get some looks at some kids, we played 7-on-7 and then we did a lot of stuff in the spring. With that and summer workouts, we are way ahead of where we were this time last year.”
Fans will see a change on the Bulldog defense this year. Thanks to the hire of new defensive coordinator Mitchell Woodard, Coahoma has added a 3-4 defensive strategy to the playbook. Woodard, who comes to Coahoma from Big Spring, will also served as the head track coach. Also new to the staff are Robert Sanchez, who was hired in the spring and will coach the outside linebackers, and K.J. Glaspie, a Stanton High School graduate, who joins the offensive coaching team.
As preparation for preseason nears, Joslin said the staff and players are eager to hit the gridiron come one minute past midnight Monday morning.
“We are doing this to get the players a workout in cool weather and to give them a big break in between the first and second practice, but it would be great to have parents and the community come out,” Joslin said. “They have put in a lot of hard work since November of last year. This is the first chance you will get to see what the 2019 Bulldogs look like.
