The Veterans Outpost had their grand opening today with Big Spring Area Chamber members, ambassadors, and many local supporters.

Veterans Outpost is a regional hub for service-members, veterans, and their families to address the issues they face. It is a non-clinical design, with no checking-in, no doctors, and no waiting rooms. It's a place to get together, hang out, and be connected to resources.

Before the ribbon cutting Shelley Smith, West Texas Centers CEO, noted that the Veterans Outpost is meant to compliment the services at the West Texas VA, and want the facility to be known as a veteran and family center.

The Veterans Wall mural on display outside of the Veterans Outpost was donated by Smith in honor of her father Darrell E. Smith who served in the U.S. Navy, and her uncles who served in the U.S. Army.

Frankie Garza, Veteran Liason Officer with the Veterans Outpost, told KBest News that the facility is open to any veteran, regardless of their discharge, as well as their family member who's interested in volunteering or receiving services.

"I'm really excited about this opportunity because in Big Spring and smaller rural Texas things like this don't exist," said Garza. He anticipated that the Veterans Outpost would be one of the first resource centers like this within the region.

"It's going to be really nice to have all these different partners working together to help veterans and their families," he continued.

Garza went on to say that it was great to see so the large turnout for the event because the organization would be relying on people within the community to help them help people.

Anyone intersted in learning more about volunteer opporutnities at the Vertans Outpost can contact Nanette Yanez, Veteran Peer Specialist, at 432-466-4024.

Veterans Peer Network and the Veterans Outpost are located in the same building in the rear of 3205 S. HWY 87 in Big Spring.
